11/19: Today’s Actions to Protect Our Democracy

We the People — Michigan

--

Hey folks,

Today’s joint Oversight Committee hearing at 1pm in the state legislature is expected to be more political theatre aimed at undermining our voices. Despite many local leaders across the state requesting to offer public comment, the chairs of the committee are not allowing us to testify. But we won’t be silenced. Here’s what we’re asking you to do:

Tell your story anyway. During the Wayne County Board of Canvassers people offered powerful stories about voting for the first time, new citizens proudly casting their ballots, 90-year old elders making sure to vote despite the pandemic, Black voters refusing to be silenced. We want our legislators to address the COVID-19 crisis, not racist attacks on our democracy. Let them know!

Tweet at/tag the Chairs of the Committee with your #IfICouldTestify Story: Twitter: @SenEdMcBroom, @RepMattHall. Facebook: @SenEdMcBroom, @StateRepHall.

Share your #IfICouldTestify story on your personal social media: You can go live or create a short, 30-second video. You can write out your thoughts. However you do it, make sure to include #IfICouldTestify and focus on your story and the need to move forward together.

To Committee Members,

I understand that the public will not be allowed to speak during today’s committee meeting.

Michiganders turned out in record numbers to vote, the voters decided and our state is ready to move forward together. This committee does nothing but sow mistrust about our votes and gives fuel to Trump’s lies about our democracy. You as elected officials should be focused on protecting public health during a global pandemic, not feeding Trump’s lies about our state.

If I were to testify… [Share how the actions of the committee speak to your experience as a voter, poll worker, poll challenger or voting rights advocate.]

Tune into the hearing at 1pm today. It will be broadcast here. Monitor this link for any changes in the broadcast link. Tweet about what you’re seeing and hearing.

This political theatre must be called out for what it is. We won’t be silenced.

Much love and solidarity,

We the People Michigan
